History of Seaview bed and breakfast accommodation on Mull- “The Red Granite Cottage by the Sea. “
Seaview unique bed and breakfast accommodation on Mull, a traditional Hebridean cottage built in 1870s from Fionnphort's red granite. Consequently with three foot thick walls, cosy Seaview, is protected from Atlantic gales that sweep in across the Iona Sound.
The building was constructed by the stonemasons that constructed the famous Stevenson rock lighthouse, Dubh Artach. Resulting in a building constructed sturdily of solid granite The neat front face of Seaview shows off the superb dressed red granite blocks tightly bound together; A testament to the lighthouse stonemason's skilled workmanship. The granite was quarried from the far side of Tor Mor hill, opposite Seaview. The quarried granite went all around the world, see Fionnphort Page read more
Seaview- The first Fionnphort Post Office and Shop.
Furthermore it is believed that Seaview was the first shop and Post Office in Fionnphort owned and operated by the Cameron Family. As a family they owned Seaview for about 100 years! The Noddings family purchased Seaview in 1990 and are the 3rd owners of this historic cottage. The Pre 1912 photo to the left shows shop/Post Office sign above the left ground floor window (Erraid bedroom) with a horse tied up outside! A wee man is standing at the gate!. A wee potted history
John a west coast islander hails from the Isle of Bute. Bute is a small island off the west coast of Scotland in the Firth of Clyde 70 miles from Mull. After school he worked in Butcher's shop then catering college. Afterwards working in the hotel and hospitality industry for several years on the mainland Scotland. After this, 5 years in a public service role in Greenock on the Clyde.
Fisherman
Thereafter John returned to the west coast and decided to follow his yearning for fishing and the sea. John moved to the Isle of Mull in 1989. Firstly, worked as a commercial fisherman learning the catching crabs from a Bedfordshire man with a doctorate in geology! After skippering MFV Gradely for Peter, he worked on a trawler, "Golden Sceptre" for a year with Skipper Alexander Wood. Finally in 1996 John started out on his own and bought his own small Orkney Fastliner called 'Wanderer' catching 'velvets' (crabs) and lobsters for a living. 300 creels some days!
"Mine Host"
In 1990, John bought Seaview and started to run the B&B alongside his own small fishing business. In 2003, John gave up full time fishing to look after his children and run Seaview. John's affinity with the sea has meant that 'Wanderer' remains a 'pleasure' boat. Consequently he spends many hours pottering around the rocky coastline enjoying the coves and beaches. Furthermore his loyal First Mate Megan and her daughter Lainie who was born at Seaview in October 2010 often accompanied him on sea adventures. The bold “Teddy Biff, Chocolate Labrador now sails with John as Bosun. John loves walking his dogs, photography, football, rugby, home brew and is partial to a fine wee dram of malt whisky.
"Teddy" Frewlings Hepple- the bouncing bear!
"Absolutely brand new for 22" is our year old chocolate " bouncy, bouncy kangaroo " Labrador retriever . Posh name, Frewlings Hepple (Hepple is a Gin from Northumberland) but to you and me "Teddy". An enthusiastic. sweet. loving girl, however believe me the welcomes are full on!
Not quite as refined as our professional "meeter and greeter" "Lainie" was or her dear mother before her " Megan". who was known locally as the " big Teddy Bear ". Hence how Teddy's name came to be, in remembrance of 0ur dearest Megan. When she is naughty she is also referred to as "Teddy Biff" after John's old school teacher.
We are hopeful with a few more months and following her great aunt Lainie's example she will carry forward the mantle of expert guest "meeter and greeter" for years to come at Seaview.
Teddy's hobbies include, eating, digging, biting flower heads, swimming, retrieving and exuberant welcoming cuddles for guests! Her breeder Mary Mc Culloch described her as the "feisty one of the litter". There were nine in the litter!
Megan, aka Kenmilleven Melting Wispa and was Seaview's official 'Meeter & Greeter'
Megan was a local lass, born in August 2007 on the Isle of Iona. Her mum is Jura (also a chocolate Labrador) who lives over on the west side of Iona on the road to the golf course; Sidney, Megan's dad used to live at The Columba Hotel with Megan's sister Peggy, but went to live in Sydney, down under.
Both of Megan's parents were chocolate Labradors and so were all her litter mates - pure chocolate heaven! Megan's favourite pastimes included people watching! You would often see her on the front porch watching the comings and goings in the village. Doing impressions of a big sad teddy bear, looking cute especially if she is on the lookout for a wee biscuit. Oher hobbies included sun bathing, walking, hunting, catching voles and mice, paddling in the sea, flushing the bracken, doing impressions of Teenage Ninja Turtles, eating 'dead' things she finds on the moors.
Naughty Habits!
The list went on, she would go to sea with John in his wee boat Wanderer, snoring like a piggy whilst snoozing, and doing 'bum tuck' runs around the front garden. She also loved 'dancing round her handbag' (rawhide chews) in the garden. Megan loved people and was an affectionate and loving dog with oodles of patience. She had us, as her owners very well trained indeed. Sadly our lovely Meggie passed away in 2019. Such a sweet soulful girl we miss her so much.
Lainie Seakingdom Lassie of Mull; Stress relief belly rub was a speciality
Introducing Lainie: On 1 October 2010, Megan had her first (and only) litter of pups at Seaview - seven beautiful chocolate and black puddings (3 chocolate boys, one black boy and three black girls). The pups are scattered across Scotland from Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides to Edinburgh. Our only black boy, Jock the Laddie went south over the border to join his new family in Nottinghamshire.
Our loyal, lovable, fiesty, fearless chief scout Lainie passed away peacefully on the 8th November 2022 aged 12 years. We really miss her a lot, she was a fast, strong and robust dog of the classic English labrador style with a superb thick waterproof double coat.
Meeter and Greeter
Seakingdom Lassie of Mull, Lainie was black and had white fur underneath three of her paws. She was a wee besom but great fun. She learned quickly and joined Megan on 'meet and greet' duties. Her natural retrieving instincts meant that she brought us many surprise gifts during the day, including socks, underwear, tea towels, cardboard boxes, shoes, plastic bottles to name but a few. She could spin on a top and was very adept at hunting mice, voles, rabbits and hares!
Teddy our young chocolate labrador below is the great great niece of Lainie and now continues the traditional Meet and Greet duties when you arrive at Seaview
